I am doing a 91 4runner with 22re automatic trans swap to 7mgte from a manual supra the local toyota "expert" has told me that the ecu from the manual supra wont work with my auto trans from the 4 runner. I'm told that the tranny wouldn't change gears that it would be locked up in 1rst.
I'm told that I need the ecu from an auto supra to complete the swap but I have doubts can anyone confirm / deny this? i have the original ecu from the 22re auto could i piggyback the two ecu's to make it work?

No, you need an auto ECU to control the auto ECT.

you don't really need auto Ecu .. but it helps - you do need to get a ECT computer out of a 87-89 automatic 4runner- it is located under the shift selector center trim (under the radio)

it is better then the supra ect because it has more appropriate shift maps.

I did wonder about that, and how that would effect the shift characteristics, especially upshift when you mash on the gas, or lockup.

Would be interesting to try.
