I'm wanting to keep the factory hood latch so I was thinking about using a factory toyota 3 core radiator with a taurus fan mounted in front of it in my 85 4Runner. I asked my local NAPA the specs on the '87 22RTE or '88 3vze since they are both 3 core radiators. They said the 22RTE was 1 1/4" thick where the 3vze was 2" thick but they are both 3 core....

Here is the radiator that I curent have in my '85 4runner.

Have you guys used the V6 radiator in a 84-88/89 truck with success? or is it too thick to reuse the stock mounting location?

i couldnt use a radiator in the stock location, i had to cut the front body work and mount it slightly under the hood latch, since i have a 2inch body lift i was able to retain my hood latch function at the same time. I'm currently using a stock mk3 supra radiator, plan on keeping it unless i have some cooling problems with it. I also use flex-a-lite low profile fans and have plenty of clearance between the fans and water pump pulley.

From what I've seen and foudn by searching so far is that the 89/90 -95 body style seems to have a slightly smaller engine compartment. Is that true? And if it is, can anyone shed some light on the 84-88/89 body style and their radiator?

I haven't looked into it, but I was thinking it would be great to run a dual pass radiator, with both necks on the passenger side. You can apparently just rotate the thermostat housing 180 degrees and remount it like that, and then just run a bend to the radiator neck. I think the dual pass units are a little more pricey, but it would clean things up a bit inside. Also, if you are making your own frame side mounts you can set it up to where you can fit an electric fan and the radiator behind the hood latch cross member.
